Ayush Wellness Spa!

Re-educate and Lose Weight at Ayush Wellness Spa

'The Trusted Beauty Guide' had the pleasure of being invited to
review one the UK's most original Ayurvedic spa's on the breath-taking
island of Jersey. We'd heard a lot about Ayush Wellness Spa so we
were happy to accept the invitation to re-educate and lose weight at Jersey's top Spa.

This 21st century sophistication designed destination spa is based on the Ancient Indian principles of Ayurveda and is situated on the outskirts of stylish St Heliers within the well acclaimed Hotel De France. Around 100 miles from mainland Britain and 14 miles from France, Jersey can be reached by either ferry or plane.

We flew from Gatwick and it took just thirty five minutes to get there. When we arrived at Jersey airport, we hired a car at the airport and drove to Hotel de France. It was only fifteen minutes away and was really easy to find.

The Island of Jersey itself covers 45 square miles of unspoilt countryside and has influences of both British and French. You actually feel like you are in a different country even though technically you are not. Despite its compact size its just 9 miles by 5 miles so everything is very close by even though you don't necessarily feel it because there is so much space surrounding you. It’s the perfect place to clear your head and appreciate the unspoilt beauty of nature. We're glad we hired the car so we could see the beautiful views around Jersey which added to the experience of wellness.

After an intoxicating Christmas, this package could not come at a better time and with another feasting Easter on its way we know exactly what to do after to get back into shape.

Having visited spas all over the world, I thought I’d seen the best of Ayurveda until my experience at Ayush Wellness Spa. We were booked in for ‘Re-Educate and Lose Weight’ package which included an in depth Ayurvedic consultation with an Ayurvedic physician, Udvartana – a herbal body massage to aid digestion and break down fatty deposits, Ayush Hot Stone therapy a delicious Ayurvedic lunch cooked using healthy herbs and spices as well as accommodation in the spa rooms of Hotel de France.

Hotel de France is a beautiful white building and as we entered we were greeted with smiles from the porter and the receptionist. We were checked in and given the keys to our room which was situated in the spa area of the hotel. Although Hotel de France is classified as a four star hotel, its service is bordering on five star.

Our room was bright, spacious and modern with a beautiful view of St Heliers from our window. We had a large terrace where we could even catch a glimpse of the sea. The bathroom had a walk-in shower and a nice size bath tub too.

As we entered Ayush Wellness Spa we could smell a light uplifting aroma. The decor was finished to the highest spec and it was spotless, even the towels were folded and displayed nicely and were available for guests to help themselves to use.

When we arrived at the spa we were greeted by a friendly receptionist who showed us to the changing rooms and gave us keys to our lockers where our slippers and gowns were waiting. It’s always a nice feeling once you relax into your gowns and slippers with your phone and laptop away.

We were told at the car hire desk at the airport when we arrived, the spa had the best swimming pool in Jersey and after experiencing it myself, I believe they have one of the best pools I’ve ever seen within a hotel. Next to it was a hydrotherapy pool,
frigidarium, caldarium and sauna along with loungers where you can relax in between using the state of the art facilities.

Everything was spotlessly clean, warm and everything we needed was there. There was also a water cooler with cups to keep ourselves rehydrated in between
using the sauna and the pools.

There were plenty of lockers in the changing rooms with plenty of space, it was comfortable, immaculate and lovely and warm. It was well thought out because there were two entrances to the changing room, one from reception and one to the pool area.

Expecting the treatment rooms to be in this area I was pleasantly surprised to
discover the Ayurvedic spa itself was an oasis of its own set above the pool area with its own separate entrance.

As I opened the door to the Ayurvedic spa I was welcomed with a soothing aroma
and atmosphere. It’s almost how you would expect heaven to be, soothing,
 relaxing and pure bliss.

The spa decor is sophisticated yet authentic with a Zen like feel to it.
There's the most beautiful water feature in the middle of the spa and the Ayurvedic treatment rooms surround this.

We were introduced to Ayurvedic physician Dr Prasanna Kerur who took us through
an in-depth consultation, this is where the real life-changing experience began.
Dr Prasanna Kerur is not just an Ayurvedic physician, his previous experience
included teaching BSc and Msc Ayurveda medicine at Middlesex University
making him one of UK's top practioners.

Dr Prasanna Kerur gave us an in-depth explanation about the concept and history of Ayurveda before asking a number of questions about myself, including my health, eating habits, lifestyle, likes and dislikes. He then checked my eyes, tongue, nails and pulse rate before advising me which Dosha I was.

In Ayurveda medicine there are three Dosha types, each relating to an energy
element, these are known as Vata (air & space), Pitta (fire & water) and Kapha
(water & earth). It’s the dominance of one, two or three of these that make up our own personal constitution and according to Ayurveda belief, disorders are a result of Doshic imbalance. Contributing factors to imbalances could be external, internal, physiological and emotional issues. Health and harmony within is achieved
when tri-doshic balance is established.

Vata types are imaginative, quick-witted and like to get things done quickly. They are also artistic and energetic. However, they also tend to worry too much and take on too many projects at the same time. If imbalanced Vata types are easily affected by the cold, tend to suffer from arthritis, joint problems, poor circulation and nervous disorders.

Pitta types are dynamic, charismatic and passionate impatient, they can easily irritated and often hot tempered. The excess heat needs cooling down. They make great leaders, are caring and goal orientated. Skin rash, heart problems and acne are some of the disorders relating to Pitta.

Kapha types are strong, calm, solid and dependable. They are more prone to weight gain and have slow metabolisms. Congestion and kidney troubles can be seen when there is an excess of the water element.

The way to achieve balance both physically and mentally is by reducing the excess of the elements, for example if you are Vata body type you will ease the physical and mental symptoms of this body type by reducing the excess air, for a Pitta body type you would reduce the excess fire and for Kapha you would reduce excess water. This can be done by acquiring the right diet by increasing specific foods whilst reducing others as well as the use herbal remedies, meditation, yoga and massage.

Dr Prasanna Kerur told me I’m a Vata body type, which really made sense because I matched all the symptoms of this body type. I was given some really helpful
advice regarding my lifestyle and eating habits which has really made a
difference even until today.

The consultation itself was such a great experience, speaking with Dr Prasanna Kerur made me realise how important it is to eat the right foods for my body constitution. There are many foods which make me feel sluggish and strangely it was the ones which Dr Prasanna Kerur told me to avoid. His explanation of Ayurveda was really good and easy to understand. I left his consultation room radiating with positivity and excited about eating and living by my Vata body type.

Having been given my consultation, diagnosis and advice regarding my diet and lifestyle, I was booked in for the treatments relevant to my needs and Dosha type.

My first treatment was named Udvertana and I was told it was an exfoliation treatment using specially formulated Ayurvedic herbs. I'm not usually a fan of exfoliating treatments usually because I've never found one good enough that I can't do at home myself. However, I was amazingly surprised with my Udvertana treatment.

It began with a full body massage using an oil based on my body constitution. After this, a combination of herbal powders was massaged into my skin. The benefits of this treatment were to help to aid digestion, break down fatty deposits and stimulate circulation.
I was then given a flannel to take into a warm shower to remove any excess
powder left on the skin.

The next day I felt amazingly light despite the large chocolate desert I had the night before. I wasn't even expecting to feel anything the day after other than smoother skin so this was a nice surprise.

I also had a 90 minute hot stone massage the next day which was lovely and relaxing. I'm very fussy when it comes to Hot Stone Massage, some practitioners make a lot of noise with the stones when massaging and some have the stones either two hot or too cool on the skin but this treatment was perfect.

After each treatment I was taken to the relaxation room to lie down and relax for as long as I wanted. I was also given a cup of Ayurveda Tea suited to my body constitution, it tasted so great that I bought some to take home.

Everything from start to finish was perfect about my experience at Ayush Wellness Spa and Hotel de France. Jersey is beautiful too especially in the summer, it’s a great place to visit to clear your head and appreciate the breath-taking views

I really believe losing weight begins in the mind and a visit to Ayush Wellness Spa is the perfect place to begin your journey to both losing weight and detoxing your mind. I'm still eating according to my body constitution and I feel great. People are even commenting on how well I look so it must be working.
